Assess

It’s time to have a big old clear out. If you are not ever using items you haven’t used in a long time, then you should look around your existing kitchen to make a large list of all of the things that you both like and dislike about it. This could range from how much storage is available to the kind of appliances you want and the colour of the cabinets. This is going to help you to retain or improve aspects of your life.

Think about whether space itself works, or if it requires opening up and extending, the most common thing to do is to knock down a wall between the kitchen and the dining room. You need to make sure this is okay to do first without compromising the structure.

Plumbing

Will you be using the existing sinks and appliances, or will you need more pipework? If you are planning to include a kitchen island containing a sink or other kindle for appliances in your new plan, then you need to make sure that plumbing and electricity supplies are properly in place. This will need to be done before the floor is laid out.

You should work out where appliances will be placed. It’s a good idea to have your sink nearby to your washing machine and dishwasher, this keeps plumbing nice and simple.

If you need heating in your kitchen, then maybe under the floor heating could be a good option to save against radiator space.

Lighting

When you are planning your lighting, it's a really good idea to make sure that it is a flexible system, so areas of the kitchen can be lit independently of one another. Secondary lighting like spotlights in cooking and food preparation areas is also a great idea. What are the must-haves for your kitchens? Is it sleek worktops? Is it an Island worktop? Plenty of cupboards? You’re in command of this kitchen, so you can choose.

Kitchen Inspiration

How you want your kitchen is a very personal journey. It helps to collect several images as well as magazine tear sheets, to put together a sort of a scrapbook or mood board. This is great for Pinterest or Instagram bookmarks. This will give you plenty of ideas for your upcoming kitchen build. We wish you the best in your designing process! There’s plenty to get stuck into! It will all be worth it when you get finished.
